The mineral wool insulation that a chemical company was using on their steam pipes was a major problem for the company. The insulation was absorbing moisture from the atmosphere and from rainwater, which was not only reducing the performance of the mineral wool but also causing corrosion under insulation. C4 Costa Rica, a certified applicator for Mascoat, recommended Industrial-DTI as a solution to these issues.
A test was set up to prove the performance of the coating. The pipe was already coated with an inorganic zinc, so there was no need to prime it. The chemical company wanted the surface temperature of the pipe to be below 176°F (80°C). The results of the test are as follows:
Surface temperature of pipe before coating – 312°F (156°C)
Ambient temperature – 82°F (28°C)
Thickness of DTI applied – 120 mils (3.0 mm)
Surface temperature of the pipe after coating – 165°F (74°C)
The test was completed in the summer of 2012, and they have already committed do several applications in 2013.
