Residential House Coating

Location: Subdivision, Briar Grove Park, Houston, TX USA                   

 Area of house: 2500 ft² (232 m²) 

Application date: December 22, 2003


Objective: The objective of this experiment was to quantify energy savings based on Mascoat WeatherBloc-IC thermal insulating coating applied to a brick structure of the house and validate energy savings over a year time.


Procedure for House: A standard 2500 ft² was selected to coat the brick facing with WeatherBloc-IC prior to application of a topcoat (note – the top coat would also be much darker in color compared to the original brick facing color). The coating was applied to a thickness of 20 mils (0.5mm) in a single coat process using an airless sprayer. The house used 40 gallons to cover all outside wall surfaces from the roofline to the foundation. All seams/voids were caulked using a 50-year elastomeric acrylic caulk prior to application of the insulating coating. The insulating coating was allowed to dry for 24 hours prior to the application of the topcoat (25-year exterior acrylic by ICI/DEVOE). A single application of the topcoat was applied.

Data Compilation: Homeowner had previous bills from year 2003. Method for calculation of energy savings was derived from using Kilowatt hrs (instead of dollars as the cost of energy rises during the year) and was compared to year 2004. Both billing schedules for the years remained the same and were compiled via month formats.


Other Note: At the time of coating/painting the house, the homeowner also replaced the roof structure. This was done the roof had been damaged in a recent storm. The homeowner replaced the roof with a 30-year asphalt based composite shingle. The homeowner also replaced the roof decking with standard OSB board. The coating was not applied to either. It was noticed that the new roof shingle was also much darker than the shingle prior to the replacement.
