A refinery on the United States West Coast had coated a fuel oil storage tank roof, in late 2007, with 80 mils Mascoat Industrial-DTI (DTI).  Pleased with the outcome, it was decided to move forward with an application on an adjacent tank roof in the plant.  The adjacent tank roof was stripped of insulation in preparation for the DTI application.  Inspection of the tank revealed the substrate was in such poor condition that it was beyond repair, unsafe to be walked upon and fabrication of a new roof would be in order.  The second tank, previously insulated with 2” FG and metal jacketing, did not make it to the 10 year lifespan as planned, ~7 years before the CUI had destroyed the integrity of the substrate. Ultimately, when the second tank comes out of service, the tank roof will be coated with insulation coating to prevent a future CUI scenario.  The client looks forward to increased energy efficiency with insulation system unaffected by moisture, personnel protection that can even be walked upon, easy visual inspection and elimination of costly CUI.
