Steam Line Coating

At the Wespine Industries wood mill in Perth, Australia, curing wood before delivery to the client is a must. The mill has a humidified chamber, which cures the wood. Connected to this chamber is a pipeline that is used to transport steam from a heater over to the chamber. Because of employees working in close proximity to this pipeline, the client required the section of pipeline to be insulated for personnel protection reasons.  If it was not insulated, the exterior of the pipe can reach temperatures of up to 120° C (248° F), a serious hazard for anyone who might come in contact with the pipe.

The company contacted Deltacoat, Mascoats’ Australian distributor, to see if Mascoat Industrial-DTI thermal insulating coating could help them out. Deltacoat informed them that the coating would be a perfect fit. The pipeline needed to continue running so as not to stop the mill’s production schedule, which made The coating optimal for the application. The coating is applied in 20 mil (0.5 mm) increments and can be sprayed onto a working substrate, so it is very efficient in this type of situation. Deltacoat was hired to supply and apply the coating.

Once the pipe had been cleaned to remove dirt and lose debris, application consisted of one thin spatter coat to ensure a good bond and three additional layers of the coating at 20 mils each. The coating was built up to 60 mils (1.5 mm) and performed exactly as expected. Instead of a 120° Celsius pipeline, it was brought down to 48° C (118° F), well within personnel protection limits.
