Mascoat Industrial is a unique line of coatings that can be used for a variety of applications in many industries. Below are some of our commonly asked questions about Mascoat Industrial and the application process.

Where is this coating used and why?
Mascoat Industrial is used to replace or enhance conventional thermal insulation systems in a variety of applications. Applications include: controlling radiant heat gain, personnel protection, reducing and/or eliminating condensation, and blocking energy transfer from one substrate to another.
Is the coating considered an anti-corrosion coating?
Because you are bonding directly to the substrate, the coating provides an excellent corrosion barrier system while providing dramatic temperature differentials, which aid in corrosion protection.
Does the coating expand and contract with the substrate?
This coating is designed to have excellent bonding with the ability to resist expansion and contraction. Its high elongation rate allows the coating to be bent without breaking or de-bonding. This is important to substrates that are constantly cycling or during startup after a shutdown.
What is the finish like after application?
The finish is a semi-smooth texture, depending on which spray application method is used. The coating can be textured if applied with the Mascoat Small Application Sprayer.
Do any materials degrade the coating?
Prolonged immersion in acids or caustics will eventually degrade the coating. Diesel, gas, and oil do not degrade the coating if contact is limited to spills. Cleaning can be accomplished by soap and water or pressure wash.
Will it adhere to stainless steel or aluminum? Do I need primers on these substrates?
It adheres directly to aluminum and stainless steel. The coating contains no harmful chlorides and therefore can be applied directly to stainless, aluminum and galvanized substrates. Our adhesion tests have shown that there is no greater bond with or without primers on these substrates or by blasting or sanding profiles. The only substrate that requires a primer is carbon steel. The important thing is to have a protective system on the steel in a thickness to cover it. You can use the priming system you are most comfortable with prior to the Mascoat Industrial application.
How thick can we apply the coating?
We have found it best to try to keep wet film thickness of no greater than 20-24 mils (0.5mm.) The reason for this is to avoid entrapping moisture by over-applying the coating. When building coat thickness it is important to make sure that the coating is dry to the touch prior to the next application. Please consult the drying schedule for appropriate dry times based on temperature and humidity.
Can the coating be touched up and can we remove the coating easily?
Yes. It can be removed with a wire wheel, sanding, blasting, etc. Make sure to remove the coating on unwanted surfaces with a rag and water quickly as the coating dries very fast.
Does the coating need a topcoat?
Due to the coating’s acrylic structure, we recommend topcoat in areas subject to harmful materials. Since our coating will have a mechanical bond with other coatings, there are no problems with solvent-based systems as a topcoat. If the coating is dirty prior to topcoat procedure, then a light pressure wash may be warranted. Hard topcoats such as epoxies and urethanes may have problems due to the elongation rates if applied on Mascoat Industrial. We recommend staying with products that have an elongation rate of 12% or greater.
Are there any harmful Volatile Organic Compounds to be concerned with?
The coating is very environmentally friendly containing less than 5 grams per liter VOC content. Cleanup concerns are kept to a minimum and there are no special storage procedures or freight concerns.
Is Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE) needed when handling the coating?
Mascoat Industrial is considered a non-hazardous coating. In small confined areas, we recommend a respirator and forced ventilation. Of course, protective clothing and OSHA standards should be followed at all times. In unconfined areas, a simple dust mask will suffice. Mascoat Industrial has a slight ammonia odor similar to acrylic house paint.
Is the coating flammable and can we do hot work while applying the coating?
Since Mascoat Industrial is non-combustible, the coating can be sprayed while hot work is ongoing. This allows for multiple crews to work in the same space.
What is the weight of the coating after it is applied?
At 40 mils (1.0mm) of coating applied, Mascoat Industrial weighs less than 0.08 lbs a square foot (0.340 kg/m2.)
Does the coating need special equipment for application?
Mascoat Industrial can be applied by two means. It can be applied with an airless sprayer and with the Mascoat Small Application. It is important to use the right application method for each application.
How long does it take to cure?
Cure times depend on ambient and humidity conditions. We recommend letting the coating cure 72 hours if a topcoat is needed or before putting an anti-condensation application in service. Higher surfaces temperatures result in a shorter cure time. It is important to make sure that the coating is dry prior to recoat procedure. This is to avoid moisture entrapment. Consult the drying schedule section on the product data sheet for more detailed dry times.
What are proper storing procedures?
We recommend keeping the coating in a heated warehouse if conditions are below freezing. If product freezes in the pail, it renders the coating useless. If left outside, we recommend keeping the product out of direct sunlight. Otherwise, the Mascoat Industrial can be stored without any special accommodations like solvent borne systems. The shelf life is 18 months from the date it was manufactured.
What colors are available for industrial coatings?
Mascoat Industrial-DTI comes in white, black and gray; Industrial-AC (Anti-Condenstation) is available in white and light gray and Industrial-HR (Highly Reflective) comes in white.
